Diffusion
The movement of molecular level particles from a higher concentration to a region of lower concentration is defined as diffusion. It is also called a mode of passive transportation. It helps in the movement of substances or materials. Until the concentration becomes equal throughout, the molecules move from a region of higher to lower concentration.
Types of Diffusion
- In simple diffusion, the particles move through a semipermeable membrane or in a solution without any help from transport proteins. The diffusion rate is very slow than the assisted diffusion rate. For instance, bacteria deliver small nutrients, water, and oxygen into the cytoplasm through simple diffusion.
- The transport of particles from one concentration to another by helping the diffusion process is called facilitated diffusion. It is also a selective process, in that the membrane only permits certain types of molecules to flow through while preventing others from doing so. This is significant because enhanced diffusion allows plants to segregate different minerals from the soil through their roots. Diffusion occurs faster than simple diffusion. However, depending on the sort of carrier contributing to the diffusion, this form of diffusion might be passive or active.
