Chloride is used for disinfecting the water supplies. Chlorination is a process that is used to treat drinking water and make it safe for consumption as it kills and inactivates the microorganism present in water. Some of the forms in which chlorine can be added to water are: Chlorine gas,  calcium hypochlorite which is a solid compound and releases chlorine when dissolved in water. Sodium hypochlorite which is a liquid bleach is a more stable and safer way to use chlorine as a disinfectant.
