Growth hormones are chemical messengers that regulate body growth, metabolism, and development. The human growth hormone (HGH) is secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulates growth in bones and muscles. Other important growth hormones include thyroxine (secreted by the thyroid gland), which regulates metabolism, and insulin (from the pancreas), which controls blood sugar levels.
Deficiency of HGH results in dwarfism, whereas excessive secretion leads to gigantism or acromegaly.
