Xerophthalmia is a medical condition characterized by dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea, primarily caused by a deficiency of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy vision, particularly in low light, as well as for keeping the eyes moist. Its deficiency leads to the inability of the eyes to produce sufficient tears, resulting in dryness and eventual damage to the corneal surface. Severe Vitamin A deficiency can also cause night blindness and permanent blindness in extreme cases.
