When IgE antibodies bound to mast cells encounter the specific allergen, the mast cells degranulate and release several inflammation-causing chemicals. Two main such chemicals are histamine and serotonin. These chemicals cause various symptoms associated with allergies, such as vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, smooth muscle contraction (e.g., in the bronchioles), and mucus secretion.
