A peculiar odor caught the author's attention one Sunday afternoon. Then he noticed smoke swiftly filling the room as it began to stream in through the ceiling's cracks. They hardly saw anything at all. The roof had caught fire and was rapidly spreading by the time they dashed into the front yard. His mother bolted back inside. She had produced a tiny metal box that contained numerous essential documents. One by one, she wanted to remove everything significant from the house. She was "crazed" at the time.
