The Legal Services Authorities (Amendment) Act 2002 was enacted to strengthen and expand the scope of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Its main purposes include:
To provide more effective and timely free legal aid and legal services to the weaker sections of society.
To ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.
To establish authorities at the national, state, and district levels for providing free legal aid and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.
To expand the categories of beneficiaries eligible for free legal aid.
This amendment strengthened the framework for promoting access to justice for all, especially marginalized and economically disadvantaged people.
