The Ringelmann scale is a visual tool used to assess the opacity or density of smoke emitted from chimneys and stacks, primarily in industrial settings. It consists of a series of charts with black grids on white backgrounds, representing different shades of gray from 0 (white, no smoke) to 5 (black, very dense smoke).
An observer visually compares the smoke with the charts to assign a numerical value indicating its intensity. This method is especially useful in monitoring particulate emissions and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
It does not measure gases like CO or SO\(_2\), nor is it specific to automobile exhaust.
