The rise of the Dravidian parties, such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and later the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), significantly challenged the dominance of the Indian National Congress in the state of Tamil Nadu. This shift began in the mid-20th century, primarily in response to the sentiments and aspirations of the Tamil people. The Dravidian movement criticized the perceived hegemony of the Congress, focusing on regional pride, socioeconomic reforms, and a strong linguistic and cultural identity. Consequently, Tamil Nadu became a stronghold for these parties, diminishing the previously established Congress system.
