Diatoms are microscopic algae that are commonly present in water bodies. In cases of suspected drowning, the presence of diatoms in internal organs such as the stomach or lungs is an indicator of water inhalation during the drowning process. When a person drowns, diatoms in the water can enter the stomach and other organs along with the water swallowed. Detecting diatoms in these organs helps forensic experts confirm the cause of death as drowning, especially when other external signs are inconclusive.
