(I) Ethyl benzoate and benzoic acid can be distinguished using an ester hydrolysis test. Ethyl
benzoate undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of an acid or base to form benzoic acid and
ethanol, while benzoic acid remains unchanged.
(II) Propanal and propanone can be distinguished using a mild oxidizing agent like Tollens’
reagent. Propanal will be oxidized to form an acid (propanoic acid), while propanone will not
react with Tollens’ reagent.
