Question:

A drunkard is walking along a straight road. He takes 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward and so on. Each step is 1 m long and takes 1 s. There is a pit on the road 11 m away from the starting point. The drunkard will fall into the pit after

The Correct Option is B

Approach Solution - 1

Displacement in first eight steps = (5 - 3) m = 2 m
Time taken for first eight steps = 8 s
Time taken by the drunkard to cover first 6 m of journey
\(= \frac{8}{6} \times 6 = 24 \, s\)
If the drunkard takes 5 steps more, he will fall into the pit. So the time taken by the drunkard to cover last five steps = 5 s.
Total time taken = 24 s + 5 s = 29 s
So, the correct option is (B) : 29s.

Approach Solution -2

The drunkard stumbled into the pit after taking five steps, so the distance covered before that was 11 - 5 = 6m.
The time taken for eight steps (displacement in the first eight steps = 5 - 3 = 2m) is 8s.
Hence, the time required to cover the first journey of 6m = \(\frac{6}{2}\times8=24s\)
And time required to cover last 5m is 5s.
So, the total time required is :
= 24 + 5 = 29s.
Hence, the correct option is (B) : 29s.

Concepts Used:

Motion in a straight line

The motion in a straight line is an object changes its position with respect to its surroundings with time, then it is called in motion. It is a change in the position of an object over time. It is nothing but linear motion.

Types of Linear Motion:

Linear motion is also known as the Rectilinear Motion which are of two types:

  1. Uniform linear motion with constant velocity or zero acceleration: If a body travels in a straight line by covering an equal amount of distance in an equal interval of time then it is said to have uniform motion.
  2. Non-Uniform linear motion with variable velocity or non-zero acceleration: Not like the uniform acceleration, the body is said to have a non-uniform motion when the velocity of a body changes by unequal amounts in equal intervals of time. The rate of change of its velocity changes at different points of time during its movement.
