Question:

A car moves from $X$ to $Y$ with a uniform speed $v_{u}$ and returns to $Y$ with a uniform speed $v_{d}$. The average speed for this round trip is

Updated On: Jun 7, 2022
  • $\frac{2 v_{d} v_{u}}{v_{d}+v_{u}}$
  • $\sqrt{\nu_{u} v_{d}}$
  • $\frac{v_{d} v_{u}}{v_{d}+v_{u}}$

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

Let $t_{1}$ and $t_{2}$ be times taken by the car to go from $X$ to $Y$ and then from $Y$ to $X$ respectively. Then, $t_{1}+t_{2}=\frac{X Y}{v_{u}}+\frac{X Y}{v_{d}}=X Y \cdot\left(\frac{v_{u}+v_{d}}{v_{u} v_{d}}\right)$
Total distance travelled
$=X Y+X Y=2 X Y$
Therefore, average speed of the car for this round trip is
$v_{ av } =\frac{2 X Y}{X Y\left(\frac{v_{u}+v_{d}}{v_{u} v_{d}}\right)}$
or $v_{ av }=\frac{2 v_{u} v_{d}}{v_{u}+v_{d}}$

Motion in a straight line

The motion in a straight line is an object changes its position with respect to its surroundings with time, then it is called in motion. It is a change in the position of an object over time. It is nothing but linear motion.

Types of Linear Motion:

Linear motion is also known as the Rectilinear Motion which are of two types:

  1. Uniform linear motion with constant velocity or zero acceleration: If a body travels in a straight line by covering an equal amount of distance in an equal interval of time then it is said to have uniform motion.
  2. Non-Uniform linear motion with variable velocity or non-zero acceleration: Not like the uniform acceleration, the body is said to have a non-uniform motion when the velocity of a body changes by unequal amounts in equal intervals of time. The rate of change of its velocity changes at different points of time during its movement.
