Sphagnum, commonly referred to as peat moss, grows in wetland areas and forms dense mats. It plays a vital role in the formation of peat, an important carbon reservoir. Peat moss is widely used in horticulture for its excellent water retention capacity and as a soil conditioner. Sphagnum also contributes significantly to carbon sequestration in ecosystems.
