Privy Purse and Its Abolition
The Privy Purse was a sum of money paid by the Government of India to the rulers of the princely states as
compensation for the privileges, titles, and powers they surrendered after the merger of their states into India
post-independence. It was a financial allowance given to the former royal families to maintain their dignity and
lifestyle.
The Privy Purse was abolished in 1971 under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. The decision was made
through the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of India. The amendment removed the provision of
Privy Purse and the legal recognition of the titles and privileges of the former rulers. The government argued
that the continuing payment of the Privy Purse was no longer justified after independence, and it was seen as
a step toward eliminating feudal remnants
