There are several important measures that can ensure the participation of women in public life, some of which are already implemented in India to enhance gender equality:
- Reservation of Seats in Local Bodies (Panchayats and Municipalities): The 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments introduced a system of reservation for women in Panchayats and Municipalities, guaranteeing them a certain percentage of seats in local governance. This provision ensures that women have a political voice at the grassroots level and can participate in decision-making processes related to local governance, education, health, and social welfare.
- Legal and Policy Reforms for Gender Equality in Employment: The government has enacted laws like the Equal Remuneration Act (1976), which ensures that women are paid equally for equal work. Additionally, policies have been created to facilitate women’s participation in all sectors of public life, including education, the workforce, and politics. These policies aim to address the gender wage gap and ensure that women can access the same job opportunities as men.
