Rust is an iron oxide. These oxides are a hydrated iron (III) oxide having the general formula as Fe2O3 .nH2O  . This is because iron is known to exhibit two different valencies of +2 and +3. Thus the iron oxides are either ferrous oxide or ferric oxide. Rusting is catalyzed by the presence of H+ ions (acidic medium). The reaction is given by:
