Jayaprakash Narayan, often referred to as JP, was a prominent Indian independence activist and socialist leader. He advocated for Non-Congressism during the 1970s, which was essentially a strategy to oppose the Congress Party's dominance in Indian politics. He believed that India's political system needed an alternative to Congress, which he saw as corrupt and authoritarian. This ideology played a key role in the formation of the Janata Party and led to the Emergency period in India (1975-77), where he became a leading figure in mobilizing resistance against Indira Gandhi's government.
