Mnemonic for the nine: Fo–No–Ba–Pa–Mi–Cu–Fa–CuF–Net = Forests, Non-agri, Barren, Pastures, Misc trees, Culturable waste, Fallow (other), Current fallow, Net area sown.
India commonly reports land use under the nine-fold classification:
.\; Forests
.\; Area under non-agricultural uses (settlements, roads, industries, public utilities)
.\; Barren and unculturable land
.\; Permanent pastures and other grazing lands
.\; Land under miscellaneous tree crops and groves (not included in net area sown)
.\; Culturable waste land
.\; Fallow lands other than current fallows (long fallow)
.\; Current fallows (left uncultivated during the current year)
.\; Net area sown (area sown at least once in the year) Note: From these, Gross Cropped Area counts multiple sowings, while Net Sown Area counts each plot once; the difference indicates cropping intensity.
