Keratolytic agents are substances that help to loosen and shed the outer layer of skin (stratum corneum). In shampoos, they are used to treat conditions like dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Selenium disulphide, resorcinol, and sulphur are all established keratolytic agents used in medicated shampoos. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant widely used as a cleansing and foaming agent in shampoos, but it is not primarily used for its keratolytic properties. While SLS can have some effect on the skin barrier, its main function is detergency.
