Comprehension
Former Governor of a State and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu was elected the 15th President of India, the first tribal woman to be elected to the position and the youngest as well. She was declared elected on Thursday after four rounds of counting, although she had crossed the half-way mark after the third round of counting itself, posting an unassailable lead over her rival and the Opposition’s candidate who conceded the election thereafter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to greet Ms. Murmu at her residence in New Delhi after the third round of counting showed that she had crossed the half-way mark.

Ms. Murmu hails from the Santhal tribe and was born in the district of Mayurbhanj, coming up the hard way in life, graduating and teaching in Odisha before entering electoral politics at the local body level and later being elected MLA and serving as a Minister in the Biju Janata Dal-BJP coalition government from 2000 to 2004. She remained an MLA till 2009, representing Rairangpur in Odisha, a town that burst into celebrations since her name was announced as a candidate for the post of President of India. She was known to intervene in stopping amendments to the Chota Nagpur Tenancy Act that was being brought in by the BJP government of Raghubar Das, which involved changing land use in tribal areas.

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

Step 1 (Historical location).
Before 1911, the British capital was in Calcutta (now Kolkata). The Governor General lived at Belvedere House in Alipore, Calcutta. Step 2 (Post-1911 shift).
After the capital shifted to Delhi, construction of the Viceroy’s House (now Rashtrapati Bhavan) began at Raisina Hill. Step 3 (Eliminate).
(B) Raisina Palace — not the historical name of Rashtrapati Bhavan, and built later.
(C) Secretariat Building — part of administrative offices.
(D) Writers’ Building — Secretariat for Bengal government, not Governor General’s residence. \[ \boxed{\text{(A) Belvedere House}} \]

The Correct Option is B

Solution and Explanation

Step 1 (Constitutional provision).
The President of India is elected by an Electoral College consisting of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and Union Territories. Step 2 (Voting system).
The election uses the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. Step 3 (Secret ballot).
As per the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, voting is conducted via a secret ballot to ensure independence of choice. Step 4 (Elimination of distractors).
- (A) and (D) mention first-past-the-post — incorrect. - (C) says open ballot — not applicable to Presidential election (it applies to Rajya Sabha elections for parties). Thus, (B) is correct. \[ \boxed{\text{(B) Proportional representation + STV + secret ballot}} \]
