Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in shaping the Constitution of India. Widely regarded as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, his contribution in the Constituent Assembly was multi-dimensional and foundational to India’s democratic and social fabric.
Dr. Ambedkar was appointed the Chairman of the Drafting Committee on 29 August 1947. He led the team that framed the Indian Constitution, synthesizing diverse ideas into a coherent legal document that balanced liberty, equality, and justice.
A strong voice for the marginalized, especially Dalits and backward classes, Ambedkar ensured that the Constitution provided for abolition of untouchability (Article 17), affirmative action (reservations), and the protection of fundamental rights for all citizens.
Ambedkar emphasized the importance of Fundamental Rights for individuals and Directive Principles of State Policy to ensure socio-economic justice. He saw these provisions as essential for real democracy.
Ambedkar’s vision helped shape India as a federal polity with a strong centre, ensuring unity in a diverse nation. He supported parliamentary democracy with checks and balances and a secular state.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s role in the Constituent Assembly was instrumental in embedding the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice in the Constitution. His contributions continue to define India’s democratic and inclusive character.
What taluqdars thought
The attitude of the taluqdars was best expressed by Hanwant Singh, the Raja of Kalakankar, near Rae Bareli. During the mutiny, Hanwant Singh had given shelter to a British officer, and conveyed him to safety. While taking leave of the officer, Hanwant Singh told him:
Sahib, your countrymen came into this country and drove out our King. You sent your officers round the districts to examine the titles to the estates. At one blow you took from me lands which from time immemorial had been in my family. I submitted. Suddenly misfortune fell upon you. The people of the land rose against you. You came to me whom you had despoiled. I have saved you. But now – now I march at the head of my retainers to Lucknow to try and drive you from the country.
