Cross-contamination refers to the transfer of harmful bacteria or allergens from one food item to another, often during food preparation or storage. This can lead to foodborne illnesses.
Two ways through which cross-contamination can happen:
1. Using the same knife or cutting board: Using the same knife or cutting board for raw meat and vegetables without cleaning it in between can transfer harmful bacteria.
2. Improper food storage: Storing raw meat on top of ready-to-eat foods in the refrigerator can cause juices from raw meat to drip onto other foods, leading to contamination.
