Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar by facilitating the uptake of glucose into the cells for energy production. There are mainly two types of diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to little or no insulin production.
- Type 2 Diabetes: A condition where the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.
If left uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
