Father of Green Revolution in India:
Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is regarded as the "Father of Green Revolution in India."
Green Revolution:
It refers to the period (1960s–1970s) when high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of crops, modern irrigation techniques, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides were introduced to increase agricultural productivity in India.
Usefulness for Farmers:
\[\begin{array}{rl} \bullet & \text{Increased food grain production, especially wheat and rice.} \\ \bullet & \text{Reduced dependency on food imports and ensured self-sufficiency.} \\ \bullet & \text{Enhanced rural employment through higher crop intensity.} \\ \bullet & \text{Improved economic condition of farmers due to surplus production.} \\ \end{array}\]
Example:
Introduction of HYV wheat varieties such as Lerma Rojo and Sonora 64 in Punjab and Haryana drastically increased wheat production, making India self-sufficient in food grains.
