Ans: CO2 is not a pollutant but a greenhouse gas and its higher emission contributes to the change in the climate in a significant way. The production of CO2 is done with many natural processes and it is a part of the atmosphere. It is an important gas for the growth and development of plants.
Apart from this all the other gases, hydrocarbons, CO and SO2 are the pollutants as they have detrimental effects on human health and also the environment.
Hydrocarbon: Hydrocarbons are formed by hydrogen and carbon, and are released during the process of incomplete combustion. They are involved in the formation of ground level ozone and even smog, they are a component of the volatil;e organic compounds. They have a bad effect on the quality of air and also the human respiratory system.
SO2: The gas that is produced by the burning of fossil fuels that have sulphur. They include coal and oil. They contribute significantly to acid rain and also the formation of particulate matter in the atmosphere. They have a detrimental effect on the respiratory system and for the formation of haze and smog.
CO: It is an odourless and colourless gas, that is formed by the incomplete combustion of the fossil fuel and biomass. It affects the transport of oxygen in the body and is a harmful air pollutant. High levels of CO are lethal to human health and especially if there is poor ventilation.
