Chapter XXI of the Code of Criminal Procedure, containing Sections 260 to 265, deals with 'Summary Trials'. Section 260 specifically grants the "Power to try summarily" to certain magistrates (Chief Judicial Magistrate, Metropolitan Magistrate, or a Magistrate of the first class empowered by the High Court). This section lists the offences which can be tried in this expedited manner, which are generally minor offences where the punishment does not exceed two years of imprisonment. Subsequent sections like S.262 and S.263 lay down the procedure and the record to be maintained in summary trials.
