Azolla is a fern in the leaf cavities of which the blue green algae Anahaena is found. This Azolla-Anabena symbiotic system is the main biofertilizer which increases yield upto 50% Anabaena fixes nitrogen which is excreted in the leaf cavities and is made available to the fern. When the fern plants die and decay they release nitrogen for utilization of the rice plants.
