Solution and Explanation
Larva of Ambystoma (tiger salamander) is called axolotl larva. It exhibits the phenomenon of neoteny or paedogenesis. If the food and water are scarce and iodine is lacking in water then the axolotl larva leaves water for land and becomes an adult without metamorphosis. During metamorphosis the gills and tail fin are lost. In the abundant supply of food and water containing iodine compounds, the axolotl larva does not change into an adult but remains in the larval form and becomes sexually mature to start reproduction. This phenomenon is known as neoteny or paedogenesis. Metamorphosis in axolotl is induced by injecting thyroid extract. Axolotl larva is found in the mountain regions of Mexico.
The mode of reproduction in which a new offspring is produced by a single parent is known as asexual reproduction. The new individuals produced are genetically and physically identical to each other, i.e., they are the clones of their parents.
Features of Asexual Reproduction:
Only single parents are involved.
The fertilization or gamete formation cannot take place.
This process of reproduction occurs in a very short time.
The organisms multiply and grow rapidly.
In this offspring produced is genetically similar.
