The oldest mention of the Varna system is found in the Rigveda, specifically in the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda 10.90). This hymn describes the cosmic being (Purusha) and explains the origin of the four Varnas:

• Vaishyas originated from the thighs.
• Shudras came from the feet.
