The Chola rulers were renowned for their monumental contributions to Hindu temple architecture. The majority of the temples they constructed were dedicated to deities such as Vishnu and Shiva, reflecting the Chola dynasty's strong ties to Shaivism (devotion to Shiva) and Vaishnavism (devotion to Vishnu). The famous Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, built by Raja Raja Chola, is a prime example of Chola architecture dedicated to Shiva.
The Chola period also saw the construction of grand temples as centers of cultural, religious, and political life, contributing to the spread of these religious traditions across South India.
