Question:

The process that you saw in Activity 11.7 is used for purification of copper. A thin plate of pure copper and a thick rod of impure copper are used as electrodes. Copper from impure rod is sought to be transfered to the thin copper plate. Which electrode should be attached to the positive terminal of the battery and why?

Approach Solution - 1

Impure Copper plate should be connected to positive terminal
Pure copper plate should be connected to negative terminal of electrode as copper ions are positively charged and will attract to negative electrode terminal.

Approach Solution -2

Copper ions are positively charged and are attracted to the plate connected to the negative terminal of the battery. As copper ions move to the thin copper plate, this pure copper plate must be connected to the battery's negative terminal. Conversely, the impure copper rod is connected to the positive terminal of the battery.

Concept insight: When electric current flows through this setup, copper ions from the solution are deposited on the pure copper plate (connected to the negative terminal), while copper ions from the impure copper rod (connected to the positive terminal) are released into the solution.

Electric Current

Defining Electric Current

It is the rate of flow of electrons in a conductor. SI Unit - Ampere (A).

Electrons are negatively charged particles hence when they move a number of charges moves.

Note:- The ability of a particular substance to conduct electricity depends on the number of electrons that are able to move . Some of the materials allow current to flow better than others.

What is an Electromotive Force?

If a force acts on electrons to make them move in a particular direction, then up to some extent random motion of the electrons will be eliminated. An overall movement in one direction. The force which acts on the electrons to move them in a certain direction is known as electromotive force and its quantity is known as voltage and is measured in V.
