  • The stilt roots of red mangrove help in breathing
  • The root system is highly entangled, huge and extensive under the water
  • A large number of animals such as small fishes, crustaceans, seahorses, etc., find shelter in this root system

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Red mangroves, which can survive in the most inundated areas, prop themselves above the water level with the help of stilt roots and can then absorb air (oxygen) through the lenticels present in the stilt roots. The given figure represents the stilt roots of Rhizophora species (e.g., R. mangle), commonly called red mangroves. Stilt roots arise from the stem or stem branches and grow towards the soil where they develop an underground root system. If the stilt roots hit water instead of soil, they grow underwater and develop a huge and extensive underwater root system where countless animals especially small fishes, sea horses, etc., find shelter.

Concepts Used:

Root

A Root refers to the vascular part of any plant which is pinpointed or discovered at the lowest level and is entirely responsible for connecting the plant with the soil. It absorbs water (H20), minerals, nutrients, etc., and further feeds the plant for its development. Roots are also responsible for acting as the repository for food and nutrients of the plant.

Characteristics of Roots:

  1. Roots are homogeneous in nature due to their potential to work towards producing similar organs like secondary or tertiary roots from the pericycle.
  2. Roots can be examined as positively Geotropic and Hydrotropic but negatively Phototropic.

Functions of Roots:

  1. The roots are in charge of providing a systematic connection to the different parts of the plant.
  2. It is also accountable for the storage of the reserved food material and the synthesis for the growth of the plant.
