Comprehension
Questions are based on a set of conditions. In answering some of the questions, it may be useful to draw a rough diagram. Choose the response that most accurately and completely answers each question.

Seven bands were scheduled to perform during the week long music festival at XLRI. The festival began on a Monday evening and ended on the Sunday evening. Each day only one band performed. Each band performed only once. The organizing committee had the task of scheduling the performances of the seven bands -- Cactus, Axis, Enigma, Boom, Fish, Dhoom and Bodhi Tree. The festival schedule followed the following conditions:

1. The performance of Bodhi Tree, the home band of XLRI, did not precede the performance of any other band.
2. Among the visiting bands three were rock bands and the other three were fusion bands. All three bands of the same genre were not allowed to perform consecutively.

Additional constraints:
- Boom, which was a rock band, refused to perform immediately before or after Fish.
- Meet, who was a lead vocalist with a rock band, refused to perform after Angelina.
- Angelina, the only female lead vocalist in the music fest besides Bony, was with the band Enigma. Angelina refused to perform after Thursday citing personal reasons.
- Ali, who was the lead vocalist of a rock band, was not with the band Dhoom, and did not perform on Saturday.
- Sid, the lead vocalist of the rock band Cactus, could perform only on Monday.
- Rupam, the only male among the lead vocalists of the fusion bands, was with Fish and performed on Wednesday.
- None of the bands performed in absence of their lead vocalist.
Question: 1

All of the following statements can be true except:

Show Hint

In conditional reasoning, always test each assumption against fixed facts. A single contradiction is enough to eliminate the option.

  • If Meet was the lead vocalist of Axis then Ali was the lead vocalist of Boom.
  • If Meet was the lead vocalist of Dhoom then Bony was the lead vocalist of Axis.
  • If Bony was the lead vocalist of Dhoom then Meet was the lead vocalist of Axis.
  • If Ali was the lead vocalist of Boom then Meet was the lead vocalist of Dhoom.
  • If Bony was the lead vocalist of Axis then Meet was the lead vocalist of Boom.

The Correct Option is

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Recall key scheduling facts.
- Sid (Cactus) performed on Monday.
- Rupam (Fish) performed on Wednesday.
- Meet (Rock band) had to perform on Tuesday, because he cannot perform after Angelina and Angelina (Enigma) performed on Thursday.
- Ali (Rock band, not with Dhoom) did not perform on Saturday, so Ali must be with Boom on Friday.
- Bony (Fusion band vocalist) performed on Saturday.
- Bodhi Tree (home band) performed on Sunday.
Step 2: Construct the schedule.
- Monday: Cactus (Sid, Rock)
- Tuesday: Dhoom/Axis (Meet, Rock)
- Wednesday: Fish (Rupam, Fusion)
- Thursday: Enigma (Angelina, Fusion)
- Friday: Boom (Ali, Rock)
- Saturday: Dhoom/Axis (Bony, Fusion)
- Sunday: Bodhi Tree (Home band)
Step 3: Evaluate the conditional statements.
- (A) If Meet = Axis → Ali = Boom → Valid, since Meet can take Axis and Ali is with Boom.
- (B) If Meet = Dhoom → Bony = Axis → Valid, because Saturday is open for Bony.
- (C) If Bony = Dhoom → Meet = Axis → Valid, since then Tuesday (Meet) could be Axis.
- (D) If Ali = Boom → Meet = Dhoom → Valid, Ali is already with Boom, so Meet could be Dhoom.
- (E) If Bony = Axis → Meet = Boom → This is impossible, because Boom is already fixed with Ali. Contradiction.
Step 4: Conclusion.
Thus, all options except (E) are possible.
\[ \boxed{\text{Correct Answer: (E)}} \]

Question: 2

Which of the following must be true?

Show Hint

When asked for “must be true,” focus on absolute assignments derived from conditions. Options suggesting alternate placements should be eliminated quickly.
Updated On: Aug 25, 2025
  • Ali performed on Saturday and Enigma performed on Thursday.
  • Dhoom performed on Thursday and Angelina performed on Tuesday.
  • Boom performed on Friday and Meet performed on Tuesday.
  • Ali performed on Friday and Enigma performed on Tuesday.
  • Bony performed on Saturday and Axis performed on Thursday.

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Recall fixed points.
- Sid (Cactus) → Monday.
- Meet → Tuesday (cannot come after Angelina).
- Rupam (Fish) → Wednesday.
- Angelina (Enigma) → Thursday.
- Ali (Boom) → Friday.
- Bony (Fusion) → Saturday.
- Bodhi Tree → Sunday. Step 2: Match with options.
- (A) Ali on Saturday → Invalid, because Ali is fixed on Friday.
- (B) Dhoom on Thursday → Invalid, Thursday belongs to Enigma (Angelina).
- (C) Boom on Friday, Meet on Tuesday → Both match the derived schedule. Valid.
- (D) Ali on Friday, Enigma on Tuesday → Invalid, because Enigma is Thursday, not Tuesday.
- (E) Bony on Saturday is correct, but Axis on Thursday is impossible (Enigma already fixed). Invalid. Step 3: Conclusion.
The only combination that must be true is (C). \[ \boxed{\text{Correct Answer: (C)}} \]

Question: 3

Which of the following is a plausible performance sequence?

Show Hint

In sequencing puzzles, always lock the fixed performers first (like Cactus on Monday, Fish on Wednesday, Enigma on Thursday). Then test each option against these anchors. Only one sequence will align perfectly.

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Recall the fixed scheduling conditions.
- Bodhi Tree (home band) must perform on Sunday.
- Sid (Cactus, Rock) must perform on Monday.
- Rupam (Fish, Fusion) must perform on Wednesday.
- Meet (Rock) cannot perform after Angelina. Therefore, Meet’s band must perform on Tuesday.
- Angelina (Enigma, Fusion) cannot perform after Thursday. Hence, Enigma must perform on Thursday.
- Ali (Rock, Boom) cannot perform on Saturday, so Boom must be on Friday.
- Bony (Fusion) performs on Saturday.
Step 2: Construct the schedule.
- Monday → Cactus (Sid, Rock).
- Tuesday → Axis/Dhoom (Meet, Rock).
- Wednesday → Fish (Rupam, Fusion).
- Thursday → Enigma (Angelina, Fusion).
- Friday → Boom (Ali, Rock).
- Saturday → Dhoom/Axis (Bony, Fusion).
- Sunday → Bodhi Tree (Home band).
Step 3: Match sequences.
- (A) Wrong → Enigma cannot be on Tuesday, because Tuesday belongs to Meet (Rock).
- (B) Wrong → Boom cannot be on Wednesday; Wednesday is fixed for Fish.
- (C) Wrong → Boom cannot be on Wednesday; it must be on Friday.
- (D) Correct → Sequence fits perfectly: Cactus (Mon), Axis (Tue), Fish (Wed), Enigma (Thu), Boom (Fri), Dhoom (Sat).
- (E) Wrong → Boom cannot be on Tuesday; it must be Friday.
Step 4: Conclusion.
Thus, the only plausible sequence consistent with all conditions is option (D). \[ \boxed{\text{Correct Answer: (D) Cactus, Axis, Fish, Enigma, Boom, Dhoom}} \]
