The Emergency in India was declared under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution in 1975 by then-President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the advice of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Article 352 allows the President to proclaim a National Emergency if the security of India or any part of it is threatened by war, external aggression, or armed rebellion. The 1975 Emergency led to widespread political repression and curtailment of civil liberties.
