Lenticels generally appear under stomata. The lenticel of phellogen itself also has intercellular spaces. Because of this relatively open arangement of cells, the lenticels are regarded as structures permitting the entry of air through the periderm. Lenticels are characterstics of woody stem but they are also found in roots of trees and other perennials for entry of oxygen through them.
