The guru says he wants to be slain first in an attempt to confound the king. Then, in an attempt to confound the king even more, he narrates the tale of his ascension to the throne in the next life. Apparently it may sound like a case of pure lie to save your dear one’s life.
However, if we dig deeper, whether intentionally or inadvertently, the sage is attempting to preserve everyone's life in the kingdom.
In the end, he succeeds in rescuing everyone from the suffering of existing in the kingdom of fools.
