Oogenesis is the process of formation of mature female gametes (ova) from oogonia in the ovary. It begins during the embryonic stage and is completed after puberty in females.
Schematic Chart of Oogenesis:
\[
\text{Oogonium (2n)}
\;\xrightarrow{\text{Mitosis}}\;
\text{Primary Oocyte (2n)}
\;\xrightarrow{\text{Meiosis I}}\;
\text{Secondary Oocyte (n)} + \text{First Polar Body (n)}
\;\xrightarrow{\text{Meiosis II (completed at fertilization)}}\;
\text{Ovum (n)} + \text{Second Polar Body (n)}
\]
Key Points:
\[\begin{array}{rl} \bullet & \text{Primary oocytes remain arrested in prophase I until puberty.} \\ \bullet & \text{Secondary oocyte is released at ovulation and remains arrested at metaphase II.} \\ \bullet & \text{Meiosis II is completed only after fertilization.} \\ \end{array}\]
