England’s policy towards Nepal was influenced by its strategic interests in the
region, particularly its rivalry with China and the British desire to control the Indian
subcontinent. Although Nepal was never formally colonized by the British, it was under
British influence after the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816). The Sugauli Treaty (1815)
forced Nepal to cede significant territories to the British. The British maintained control over
Nepal’s foreign relations and military, leading to the establishment of a subsidiary alliance
system.
