The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

To determine if Chanakya can gain admission to an engineering college in Tamil Nadu, evaluate the criteria provided:

  • i) Chanakya secured 60% marks in CBSE, which satisfies criterion (i) as he has met the requirement of at least 50% marks.
  • ii) Chanakya passed with academic subjects, meeting sub-criterion (ii)(a).
  • iii) Chanakya was not a resident of Tamil Nadu, but we must explore exception B: If a candidate's parents or guardians have been serving in Tamil Nadu for the past five years, they can be admitted under other state quota. However, the current data does not provide information about his parents or guardians' residence or service. This leaves us without enough information to apply this exception.
  • iv) Chanakya secured only 50% marks in the entrance exam, which does not meet the requirement of at least 60%. There is no information about his sports record that might allow for admission under the sports quota (exception A).

Based on this evaluation, the data we have is inadequate to determine admission.

Therefore, the answer is: c) If the data are inadequate to take a decision.
