Desmosomes are junctional complexes in which adjacent membranes possess discshaped thickenings of about 0.5 ?? diameter, a number of tonofibrils and transmembrane linkers embedded in dense intercellular material. Desmosomes function as spot welds and are hence called spot desmosomes. They occur in epithelia.
