$\Delta G^{\circ}$ versus $T$ plot in the Ellingham's diagram slopes downward for the reaction

Updated On: Aug 15, 2022
  • $C +\frac{1}{2} O _{2} \longrightarrow CO$
  • $CO +\frac{1}{2} O _{2} \longrightarrow CO _{2}$
  • $2 Ag +\frac{1}{2} O _{2} \longrightarrow Ag _{2} O$
  • $Mg +\frac{1}{2} O _{2} \longrightarrow MgO$

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

In the reaction, $C +\frac{1}{2} O _{2} \longrightarrow CO$, the $\Delta S$ increases. Therefore as the temperature increases, $T \Delta S$ increases and thus $\Delta G(\Delta H-T \Delta S)$ decreases. In other words, the slope of the curve for the formation of $CO$ decreases, whereas for all other oxides, it increases.

General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

What are Ores and Minerals?

Minerals are the naturally occurring, homogeneous inorganic solid substances. They are having a definite chemical composition and crystalline structure, hardness and color. For example, copper pyrite, calamine, etc.

Impurities in an ore are called gauge. The removal of a gauge from the ore is called concentration ore.

Several steps are involved in the extraction of pure metal from ores. Major steps are as follows –

  • Concentration of the ore
  • Isolation of the metal from its concentrated ore
  • Purification of the metal
