There was a better way for the story to end. Mahendra had the opportunity to disprove the ghost idea and demonstrate his courage instead of quitting his work. An alternative resolution might see Mahendra and Iswaran departing together, 

therefore preserving their relationship as it was previously portrayed in the narrative. Mahendra has emphasized that Iswaran is a man for all seasons.
