Black foot disease is caused by arsenic in drinking water. Arsenic enters ground water either as seepage from above or during the weathering of bed-rock. Arsenic pollution causes repeated diarrhoea, hyperkeratosis or skin thickening, periheral neutritis, lung and skin cancers. There is peripheral vascular insufficiency and hyperpigmentation resulting in gangrenous condition known as black foot disease.
