Question:

Appreciation of the poem :
Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the points given below :
A Teenager's Prayer Each day brings new beginnings,
Decisions I must make.
I am the only one to choose
The road that I will take.
I can choose to take the road of life,
That leads to great success
Or travel down the darkened road,
That leads to great distress.
Please open up my eyes, dear Lord,
That I might clearly see
Help me stand for what is right,
Bring out the best in me.
Help, Lord, to just say "no"
When temptation comes my way,
That I might keep my body clean
And fit for life each day.
When my teenage years are over,
I know that I will see
That life is lived its very best
With you walking next to me.
--- J. Morse

Solution and Explanation

Appreciation of 'A Teenager's Prayer'
Title: The title of the poem is "A Teenager's Prayer".
Name of the poet: The poem is written by J. Morse.
Rhyme scheme: The rhyme scheme for each stanza in the poem is abcb. For example, in the first stanza, 'make' (line 2) rhymes with 'take' (line 4). This consistent pattern gives the poem a song-like rhythm.
Figure of speech: The poem uses several figures of speech. One prominent example is Apostrophe. In the line, "Please open up my eyes, dear Lord," the poet directly addresses God, who is an abstract and absent entity. Another figure of speech is Metaphor in the line "The road that I will take," where 'the road' is a metaphor for the choices and the path one takes in life.
Theme/Central idea: The central idea of the poem is the dilemma faced by a teenager who stands at a crossroads in life. The poem is a prayer to God, seeking guidance and strength to make the right decisions, choose the path of righteousness, resist temptations, and live a successful and clean life under divine supervision.
