  • Nitrogen oxides are a type of petrol (NOx). In urban areas, burning fossil fuels (such as petrol and diesel engines) is the main source of nitrogen oxides, whereas in rural areas, microorganism activity in compost and farming practices, such as the use of synthetic fertilizers, are the main sources. Nitric oxide exposure may cause the respiratory system to become inflamed.

  • Sulphur (SOx) is a gas that is concealed and has a strong odor. Sulfur oxides are compounds that contain SOx. The bulk of sulfur dioxide's origins come from the processing of sulfur-bearing mineral ores and the combustion of fossil fuels, both of which are human sources of the gas. Sulfur dioxide exposure severely impairs the respiratory system in both people and animals. Sulfur dioxide and water can mix in the presence of water in the atmosphere to create dangerous acid rain.
