The Correct Option is A

Approach Solution - 1

A solution MgCl2 in water is acidic (pH < 7) due to hydrolysis. $ {MgCl2 + 2H2O -> Mg(OH)2 + 2H+ + 2Cf}$

Approach Solution -2

Ans. Magnesium ions and chloride ions combine chemically to generate the molecule known as magnesium chloride. It is made of salt. It is created by the element that is a member of the halide group. It is a substance that is very water-soluble. Most of the time, this substance may be found along the shore or in bodies of water. It's an inorganic substance. Although not in its purest form, it may be found in the oceans. Pure magnesium chloride must be extracted by refining. Magnesium chloride has the chemical formula MgCl2. In industries and medical enterprises, it is used more frequently.

  • Magnesium i.e., Mg is having the valency electrons of 2. So, it has to lose the 2 electrons. After losing 2 electrons this forms a cation Mg+2.
  • Chloride i.e., Cl is having the valency electrons of 7. So, it has to gain 1 electron. After gaining 1 electron this forms an anion Cl-1.
  • So, this results in the combination of the 1 Mg+2 cation and 2 Cl- anions.
  • It produces MgCl2 compound.

The formula for magnesium chloride can be written by using the following steps:

  • Write each and every element symbol.
  • Find the configuration and valency of the elements.
  • Check whether the charges are balanced or not.
  • Add subscripts to the elements if necessary, so the charge for the entire compound becomes zero.
  • Do the crisscross method and check whether it is done right or wrong.

Concepts Used:

Group 1 Elements

Group one of alkali metals is s-block elements with just one electron in their s-orbital. They are are alkali metals. They are named so because of the alkaline nature of the hydroxides and oxides.

Alkali metals are characterized by one s-electron in the valence shell of their atoms.

Alkali metals have a corresponding [Noble gas] ns1 electronic configuration. They occupy the first column of the periodic table. Alkali elements are:

  • Lithium(Li)
  • Sodium(Na)
  • Potassium (K)
  • Rubidium (Ru)
  • Cesium (Cs)
  • Francium (Fr)

They have occupied successive periods from first to seven. Francium is a radioactive element with very low half-life.

Electronic Configuration:

  • Alkali metals have one electron in their valence shell.
  • The electronic configuration is given by ns1. For example, the electronic configuration of lithium is given by 1ns1 2ns1.
  • They tend to lose the outer shell electron to form cations with charge +1 (monovalent ions).

This makes them the most electropositive elements and due to the same reason, they are not found in the pure state.
