The first rock paintings in India were discovered by A.C.L. Carlleyle, marking the beginning of the study of prehistoric art. Bhimbetka, extensively studied by V.S. Wakankar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing Mesolithic art. Most Mesolithic rock art depicts animals as a central theme, and snakes are notably absent in the imagery.
