The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution lists the official languages recognized by the Government of India.
Step 2: Historical development.
Originally, there were 14 languages in the Eighth Schedule. Through successive constitutional amendments, the number increased:
- 15th to 21st Amendments added Sindhi, Konkani, Manipuri, Nepali, etc.
- The 92nd Constitutional Amendment (2003) added Bodo, Santhali, Maithili, and Dogri.
Step 3: Current number.
As of today, the total stands at 22 languages.
