In Jainism, there are 24 Tirthankaras (spiritual teachers who have attained liberation and guide others on the path to salvation). The 24th Tirthankara is Vardhaman Mahavir, also known simply as Mahavir. He was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama (present-day Bihar, India). Mahavir revitalized Jain philosophy and laid the foundation for its current practices and teachings.
